Jadwiga is a Polish aristocrat who is forced to flee her home after her family is killed by the Nazis. She finds refuge in a convent, where she works as a nurse. Hanka is a Jewish woman who is forced to live in hiding after her family is taken away. She finds solace in the music of Chopin, which she plays on a secret piano in the attic of her hiding place.
Zofia is a German woman who is sent to Poland to work as a nurse in a hospital for wounded German soldiers. She is horrified by the atrocities she witnesses, and she begins to question her loyalty to her country.

About the Author
The Barbarian Nurseries is the debut novel of Polish-American author Hanna Krall. Krall was born in Warsaw, Poland, in 1935. She began her career as a journalist, and her work has been published in newspapers and magazines around the world.
