David Lewis was an American actor best known for his role as Sergeant Martin Brody in the classic horror film Jaws (1975). He also starred in a number of other films and television shows, including The Godfather (1972),One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest (1975),and Taxi Driver (1976).
In addition to his acting career, Lewis was also a talented writer. He wrote the screenplay for the 1979 film The Warriors, which is considered one of the greatest cult films of all time. The Early Years
David Lewis was born in Brooklyn, New York, on October 12, 1932. His father was a police officer and his mother was a schoolteacher. After graduating from high school, Lewis attended the University of Michigan on a football scholarship. However, he soon realized that he was more interested in acting than in football. He left Michigan after two years and moved to New York City to pursue his acting career.
The Acting Career
Lewis's first acting role was in a small off-Broadway play in 1957. He went on to appear in a number of other off-Broadway plays and in a few films. In 1972, he landed his breakout role in The Godfather. Lewis played the role of Clemenza, a loyal member of the Corleone family. His performance was critically acclaimed and helped to establish him as a major film actor.
After The Godfather, Lewis went on to star in a number of other classic films, including One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, Taxi Driver, and Jaws. His performance as Sergeant Martin Brody in Jaws is one of his most iconic roles. Lewis's portrayal of the small-town police chief who battles a great white shark is both believable and terrifying. It is a performance that has stayed with audiences for decades.
The Writing Career
In addition to his acting career, Lewis was also a talented writer. He wrote the screenplay for the 1979 film The Warriors. The Warriors is a cult classic about a group of street gang members who must travel through hostile territory to get home after a gang meeting goes awry.
