The Private Pilot Practical Test Standards for Airplane SEL, MEL, SES, and MES on Federal Register provide the requirements for taking and passing the practical test for a private pilot certificate with an airplane category and single-engine land (SEL),multi-engine land (MEL),single-engine sea (SES),or multi-engine sea (MES) class rating.
The practical test is designed to assess the applicant's ability to safely operate an airplane in accordance with the applicable regulations and procedures. The test consists of three parts:
- Oral examination - The oral examination covers the applicant's knowledge of the applicable regulations, procedures, and maneuvers.
- Flight test - The flight test evaluates the applicant's ability to safely operate an airplane in a variety of maneuvers and situations.
- Ground test - The ground test evaluates the applicant's knowledge of the airplane's systems and procedures.
To be eligible to take the private pilot practical test, the applicant must:

- Be at least 17 years old.
- Hold a valid student pilot certificate with an airplane category and SEL, MEL, SES, or MES class rating.
- Have logged at least 40 hours of flight time, including:
- 20 hours of flight training in an airplane of the appropriate class.
- 10 hours of solo flight time in an airplane of the appropriate class.
- Have passed the written examination for the private pilot certificate with an airplane category and SEL, MEL, SES, or MES class rating.
The practical test consists of the following three parts:
The oral examination covers the applicant's knowledge of the following areas:
- Federal Aviation Regulations (FARs)
- Airplane systems and procedures
- Aerodynamics
- Meteorology
- Navigation
- Performance and limitations
- Emergency procedures
The oral examination is typically conducted in a one-on-one setting with an FAA examiner. The examiner will ask the applicant a series of questions to assess their knowledge of the required subject areas.
The flight test evaluates the applicant's ability to safely operate an airplane in a variety of maneuvers and situations. The flight test typically consists of the following maneuvers:
- Straight and level flight
- Turns
- Climbs and descents
- Stalls
- Spins (for MEL and MES class ratings only)
- Landings
- Takeoffs
- Emergency procedures
The flight test is typically conducted in an airplane of the appropriate class. The examiner will instruct the applicant on the maneuvers to be performed and will evaluate their performance.
The ground test evaluates the applicant's knowledge of the airplane's systems and procedures. The ground test typically consists of the following:
- Inspection of the airplane
- Preflight procedures
- In-flight procedures
- Post-flight procedures
The ground test is typically conducted in a one-on-one setting with an FAA examiner. The examiner will ask the applicant a series of questions to assess their knowledge of the required subject areas.
To pass the practical test, the applicant must demonstrate a satisfactory level of proficiency in all three parts of the test. The examiner will evaluate the applicant's performance based on the following criteria:
- Knowledge - The applicant must demonstrate a thorough knowledge of the applicable regulations, procedures, and maneuvers.
- Skill - The applicant must demonstrate the ability to safely operate an airplane in a variety of maneuvers and situations.
- Judgment - The applicant must demonstrate good judgment and decision-making skills.
If the applicant fails any part of the practical test, they will be required to retake that part of the test.
