In 1942, during World War II, Klaus's village was bombed by Allied forces. Klaus was playing in the street when a bomb exploded near him. He was seriously injured, losing both of his legs and his right arm.
Klaus spent the next several years in the hospital, where he underwent multiple surgeries. He was fitted with prosthetic legs and an artificial arm, but he never gave up hope.
In 1948, Klaus was invited to visit the United States by the Shriners, a fraternal organization that supports children's hospitals. He spent several months in the US, where he received medical care and met with other children who had lost limbs.
Klaus's trip to the US was a turning point in his life. He returned to Germany a more confident and determined child. He went on to finish school and university, and he became a successful businessman.
