If We Were King: Advice for President Trump
Donald Trump was elected President of the United States in 2016. His presidency has been marked by controversy, both domestically and internationally. Some of his most controversial policies include his travel ban on citizens from several Muslim-majority countries, his withdrawal from the Paris Climate Agreement, and his imposition of tariffs on goods from China.

Trump's supporters argue that he is a strong leader who is not afraid to make tough decisions. They point to his accomplishments, such as the passage of tax cuts and the appointment of conservative judges to the Supreme Court. His critics argue that he is a dangerous demagogue who is eroding American democracy. They point to his attacks on the media, his encouragement of violence, and his attempts to undermine the rule of law.
In this essay, I will offer my own advice to President Trump. I will draw on my experience as a historian and political scientist to offer a nonpartisan perspective on his presidency. I will also offer some suggestions for how he can improve his relationship with the American people and the world.
A Time for Healing
The United States is a deeply divided country. The 2016 election was one of the most bitter and divisive in recent history. Trump's presidency has only further exacerbated these divisions.
As President, Trump has a responsibility to heal the wounds of the country. He needs to reach out to those who did not vote for him and try to understand their concerns. He needs to tone down his rhetoric and stop using divisive language. He needs to find ways to bring people together and create a more inclusive society.
A Time for Leadership
The United States is facing a number of serious challenges, both at home and abroad. The country is divided, the economy is struggling, and the world is becoming increasingly dangerous. Trump has a responsibility to provide leadership during this difficult time.
As President, Trump needs to set a clear agenda for the country. He needs to articulate a vision for the future and lay out a plan for how to achieve it. He needs to make tough decisions and be willing to take risks. He needs to be a strong leader who can inspire the American people and make the country proud.
A Time for Diplomacy
The United States is the world's superpower. As such, it has a responsibility to play a leading role in promoting peace and security. Trump has a responsibility to use his power wisely and to avoid unnecessary conflicts.
As President, Trump needs to engage with other countries and build relationships. He needs to work with allies to address common challenges, such as terrorism and climate change. He needs to be willing to negotiate and compromise. He needs to be a diplomat who can build bridges and create a more peaceful world.
Donald Trump is the President of the United States. He has a responsibility to lead the country and to make the world a better place. I urge him to use his power wisely and to work for the good of all Americans.
