The Early Years
The first Greeks arrived in San Francisco during the Gold Rush of 1849, seeking their fortune in the gold fields. They came from all over Greece, but most were from the Peloponnese and the Ionian Islands. These early immigrants were mostly young men, who worked as miners, laborers, and merchants.
In the early years, the Greek community in San Francisco was small and scattered. However, as more and more Greeks arrived in the city, they began to establish their own institutions. In 1854, the first Greek Orthodox church in San Francisco was founded, and in 1860, the first Greek newspaper was published.
The Greek Community Takes Root
By the end of the 19th century, the Greek community in San Francisco had taken root. Greeks were now working in all walks of life, and they had established a number of businesses, churches, and schools. The community was also becoming more politically active, and in 1896, the first Greek American was elected to the California State Assembly.
The early 20th century was a time of great growth for the Greek community in San Francisco. The city's Greek population continued to grow, and new institutions were established, including the Greek American Progressive Association (GAPA) in 1906 and the Greek Orthodox Cathedral of the Annunciation in 1912.
The Community Today
Today, the Greek community in San Francisco is thriving. There are over 100,000 Greek Americans living in the Bay Area, and they are active in all aspects of civic life. Greeks have made significant contributions to the city's culture, economy, and politics, and they continue to play a vital role in the community.
Greeks in San Francisco: Images of America is a beautiful and informative book that captures the history and spirit of this vibrant community. Through its stunning photographs and engaging text, this book provides a unique glimpse into the lives of Greek immigrants and their descendants who have helped to make San Francisco the great city it is today.
